Step-by-step assembly guide
Building a PC is easier than it looks. Modern components are designed to fit together in specific ways, making it hard to install something incorrectly. What you need: - A clean, well-lit workspace (a large table works well). - A Phillips-head screwdriver (magnetic tip recommended). - Your components. - Anti-static precautions: touch a grounded metal object before handling components, or wear an anti-static wrist strap. Tip: Open all boxes and verify you have everything before starting. Read the motherboard manual -- it contains critical information about M.2 slot locations, RAM slot order, and front panel header pinouts.
Start with the motherboard outside the case, on top of its box (as a soft, anti-static surface). For AMD AM5/AM4: Lift the lever, align the golden triangle on the CPU corner with the triangle on the socket, gently place the CPU (it should drop in with zero force), then close the lever. For Intel LGA 1700: Open the retention bracket by pressing down and sliding the lever out. Lift the bracket. Align the notches on the CPU with the socket keys. Place the CPU gently. Close the bracket and press the lever down firmly. The plastic cover will pop off automatically -- this is normal. Never force a CPU into the socket. If it does not drop in easily, check the alignment.
RAM: Open the clips on the RAM slots. For two sticks on a four-slot board, use slots 2 and 4 (counting from the CPU). Align the notch on the RAM stick with the key in the slot. Press firmly on both ends until the clips snap shut. This requires some force -- do not be afraid to push. M.2 SSD: Remove the M.2 heatsink (if present). Insert the SSD at a 30-degree angle into the M.2 slot. Press it down flat and secure with the included screw (or the tool-less mechanism on some boards). Replace the heatsink.
Apply thermal paste to the CPU (a pea-sized dot in the center, unless paste is pre-applied on the cooler). For tower air coolers: Attach the mounting brackets to the motherboard (varies by cooler model), then mount the cooler, tightening screws in a cross pattern for even pressure. Attach the fan to the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard. For AIO liquid coolers: Mount the pump/cold plate on the CPU the same way as an air cooler. Mount the radiator to the case (often the top or front). Connect the pump to AIO_PUMP header and fans to the appropriate fan headers. Tighten all mounting screws evenly and do not overtighten.
Install the I/O shield (if not pre-attached to the motherboard). Install standoffs in the case matching your motherboard's form factor. Carefully lower the motherboard into the case, aligning screw holes with standoffs. Secure with screws -- do not overtighten. Connect the front panel headers (power button, reset, HDD LED, USB) according to your motherboard manual. Connect front panel USB 3.0 and USB-C headers if your case has them.
PSU: Mount the PSU in the bottom of the case (fan facing down if there is a ventilation hole). Route the necessary cables through the case's cable management holes. GPU: Remove the appropriate PCIe slot covers from the case. Insert the GPU into the top PCIe x16 slot firmly until it clicks. Secure with screws. Connect PCIe power cables from the PSU. Connect all power cables: - 24-pin motherboard power. - 8-pin (or 4+4 pin) CPU power. - PCIe power to GPU (6+2 pin or 12VHPWR). - SATA power to any 2.5" or 3.5" drives.
Route all cables behind the motherboard tray. Use zip ties or velcro straps to secure them. Ensure no cables are touching fans or blocking airflow. Final checklist before powering on: - CPU power connected? - Motherboard 24-pin connected? - GPU power connected? - RAM fully seated (clips closed)? - CPU cooler fan connected to CPU_FAN? - Front panel power button header connected? - Monitor connected to GPU (not motherboard)? - PSU switch turned ON? Double-check everything, then press the power button.
Press the power button. If everything is connected correctly, fans will spin, lights will turn on, and you should see the motherboard logo or BIOS screen on your monitor. If nothing happens: check that the PSU switch is on, power cables are fully seated, and the front panel power button header is connected correctly. In BIOS: enable XMP/EXPO to run your RAM at its rated speed (it defaults to a slower base speed). Set your boot order to boot from USB if you are installing Windows. Install your operating system from a USB drive, then install motherboard drivers and GPU drivers. Your PC build is complete.
Forgetting to enable XMP/EXPO: Your RAM will run at a slower base speed until you enable its profile in BIOS. Connecting monitor to motherboard instead of GPU: You will get no display if your CPU lacks integrated graphics, or worse performance if it does. Not plugging in CPU power: The system will not boot at all. Installing RAM in wrong slots: Always check the manual for which slots to populate first for dual-channel. Forgetting standoffs: Without them, the motherboard can short against the case. Over-tightening screws: This can crack the motherboard PCB. Snug is enough. Using too much thermal paste: A pea-sized dot is all you need.
After installing your OS: 1. Install motherboard drivers from the manufacturer's website (chipset, LAN, audio). 2. Install GPU drivers from NVIDIA (GeForce Experience) or AMD (Adrenalin). 3. Run Windows Update to get the latest patches. 4. Install monitoring software like HWiNFO64 to check temperatures and performance. 5. Benchmark your system with Cinebench (CPU) or 3DMark (GPU) to verify everything is working correctly. 6. Customize fan curves in BIOS or motherboard software for optimal noise/cooling balance.
