Choosing the right display for your needs
Resolution determines image sharpness. More pixels mean finer detail: 1080p (1920x1080 / Full HD): The standard for budget gaming. Still looks good on monitors up to 24 inches. Requires less GPU power to drive, meaning higher frame rates. 1440p (2560x1440 / QHD): The sweet spot for gaming in 2024/2025. Noticeably sharper than 1080p, especially on 27-inch monitors. Requires a mid-range GPU (RTX 4060 Ti or better). 4K (3840x2160 / UHD): Stunning clarity, especially on 27-32 inch monitors. Demands a high-end GPU (RTX 4070 Super or better) for smooth gaming. Excellent for content creation and productivity. Ultrawide (3440x1440): A wider field of view for immersive gaming and productive multitasking. Requires a strong GPU similar to standard 1440p. For gaming, 1440p at 27 inches offers the best balance of image quality and performance. For competitive gaming, some players prefer 1080p at 24 inches for maximum frame rates.
The panel type determines color accuracy, contrast, viewing angles, and response times: IPS (In-Plane Switching): The most popular choice. Excellent color accuracy and wide viewing angles. Good response times. Slightly lower contrast than VA panels. Best for: general gaming, content creation, and everyday use. VA (Vertical Alignment): Higher contrast ratios (deeper blacks) than IPS. Good color accuracy. Slightly slower response times can cause dark smearing in fast-paced games. Best for: cinematic single-player games, movie watching, and dark room use. TN (Twisted Nematic): The fastest response times and highest refresh rates, but the worst color accuracy and narrowest viewing angles. Increasingly rare. Best for: competitive esports players who prioritize speed above all else. OLED: Each pixel produces its own light, giving infinite contrast ratio and perfect blacks. Excellent colors and response times. More expensive and has potential burn-in risk. Best for: premium gaming, HDR content, and users who want the best image quality. For most people, IPS is the recommended choice. OLED is the premium option if budget allows.
Refresh rate (Hz) is how many times per second the monitor updates the image. Higher refresh rates make motion smoother: 60 Hz: The baseline. Acceptable for office work and casual gaming. 75 Hz: A small improvement over 60 Hz. Budget monitors often offer this. 144 Hz: The sweet spot for gaming. The jump from 60 to 144 Hz is immediately noticeable and makes games feel much smoother. 165 Hz: A small bump above 144 Hz, common on many gaming monitors. 240 Hz+: Diminishing returns for most people, but competitive gamers appreciate the extra smoothness. Response time (ms) measures how quickly a pixel can change color. Lower is better. 1ms response times are ideal for fast-paced games. IPS panels typically achieve 1-4ms, which is excellent for all but the most demanding competitive play. For most gamers, a 144-165 Hz IPS monitor with 1ms response time is perfect.
When your GPU's frame rate does not perfectly match the monitor's refresh rate, you get screen tearing (visible horizontal lines) or stuttering. Adaptive sync technologies solve this by dynamically matching the monitor's refresh rate to the GPU's output: AMD FreeSync: AMD's open standard. Works with AMD GPUs natively. Many FreeSync monitors also work with NVIDIA GPUs (via G-Sync Compatible mode). NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible: NVIDIA's certification that a FreeSync monitor works well with their GPUs. No additional hardware cost. NVIDIA G-Sync (hardware module): A dedicated module in the monitor for the best possible adaptive sync experience. More expensive. For most buyers, a FreeSync Premium monitor works great with both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. Always enable adaptive sync in your GPU driver settings.
HDR (High Dynamic Range) displays brighter highlights and deeper shadows for a more realistic image. However, not all HDR is equal: DisplayHDR 400: Minimal brightness improvement. Barely qualifies as HDR. Most budget "HDR" monitors fall here. DisplayHDR 600: Noticeable improvement with local dimming. A decent entry point for HDR. DisplayHDR 1000+: True HDR experience with high peak brightness and extensive local dimming zones. OLED HDR: The best HDR experience due to per-pixel lighting and infinite contrast. Unless you are buying a monitor with DisplayHDR 600 or higher (or OLED), do not pay extra for HDR -- DisplayHDR 400 is not worth the premium.
Budget 1080p gaming: Any 24" IPS 144Hz monitor from well-known brands. Expect around 30,000-40,000 DA. Sweet spot 1440p gaming: Gigabyte G27Q (27" IPS, 144Hz, 1440p) -- available around 115,000 DA in Algeria. Excellent all-around choice. 27" 1440p 165Hz+: Look for options from MSI, ASUS, or LG with IPS panels. These pair perfectly with the RTX 4070 Super. Competitive esports: A 24" 1080p 240Hz+ IPS monitor prioritizes frame rate for competitive advantage. Always check if the monitor supports FreeSync Premium for smooth gaming with any modern GPU.
