Choosing the right board for your CPU
The motherboard is the backbone that connects all your components. It hosts the CPU socket, RAM slots, PCIe slots for your GPU, M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs, SATA ports for other drives, USB ports, audio, networking, and power delivery (VRM). Choosing the right motherboard determines your CPU compatibility, RAM type, expansion options, and features like WiFi and Bluetooth.
The socket must match your CPU (AM5, AM4, LGA 1700, LGA 1851). The chipset determines features like the number of USB ports, PCIe lanes, and overclocking support. AMD AM5 chipsets: X670E (top-end, full PCIe 5.0), X670 (high-end), B650E (mid-range with PCIe 5.0 for GPU), B650 (mid-range), A620 (budget, no overclocking). Motherboard form factors determine the physical size and number of expansion slots: ATX: The standard size (305 x 244 mm). Typically has 4 RAM slots, 2-3 M.2 slots, multiple PCIe slots, and the most connectivity. Fits in mid-tower and full-tower cases. Micro-ATX: Slightly smaller (244 x 244 mm). For a 65W CPU like the Ryzen 5 5600X, even a budget board's VRM is sufficient. For power-hungry chips like the i7-14700K (125W+) or Ryzen 9 7950X (170W), you need a board with strong VRM design -- look for reviews that test VRM thermals under load. B650 boards like the ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS or MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK have excellent VRMs that handle even the Ryzen 9 7950X comfortably.
Essential features to consider: - M.2 slots: At least 2 for NVMe storage. PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot is a bonus for future drives. - USB ports: Enough rear USB-A and USB-C ports for your peripherals. A front-panel USB-C header is nice for modern cases. - WiFi: Built-in WiFi 6E is convenient if you cannot run an Ethernet cable. Otherwise, Ethernet is always preferred. - Audio: Most boards have Realtek ALC897 or ALC1220 audio, which is adequate.
