HDD, SSD, and NVMe drives compared
There are three main types of storage drives: HDD (Hard Disk Drive): Uses spinning magnetic platters. Cheap and available in large capacities (1-18 TB), but slow (80-200 MB/s). Best used for bulk storage of files, media libraries, and backups. SATA SSD: Uses flash memory with a SATA interface. About 5x faster than HDDs (up to 550 MB/s). A dramatic upgrade for boot times and application loading. Available in 2.5-inch form factor. NVMe SSD: Uses flash memory with the PCIe interface via M.2 slots on the motherboard. Dramatically faster than SATA SSDs: - PCIe Gen 3: up to 3,500 MB/s - PCIe Gen 4: up to 7,000 MB/s - PCIe Gen 5: up to 14,000 MB/s NVMe drives are the standard for modern builds. They are compact (M.2 form factor, no cables needed) and deliver the best real-world performance.
250-500 GB: Minimum for a budget build. Enough for Windows, a few applications, and a handful of games. You will need to manage space actively. 1 TB: The recommended starting point. Fits Windows, essential applications, and 8-15 large games comfortably. 2 TB: Ideal for gamers with large libraries or content creators working with video and design files. 4+ TB: For serious content creators, data hoarders, or those who refuse to uninstall games. A popular strategy is to use a fast NVMe SSD (500 GB-1 TB) for your OS and frequently used applications, plus a larger SATA SSD or HDD (1-2 TB) for bulk storage.
PCIe Gen 3 NVMe drives (up to 3,500 MB/s) are the budget option. They are still excellent for OS boot, application loading, and gaming. Real-world game loading times are nearly identical between Gen 3 and Gen 4. PCIe Gen 4 NVMe drives (up to 7,000 MB/s) are the current sweet spot. They offer a noticeable improvement in large file transfers and some content creation workloads. Prices have dropped significantly. PCIe Gen 5 NVMe drives (up to 14,000 MB/s) are the cutting edge. They are expensive, run hot (often need heatsinks), and the performance gain over Gen 4 is only noticeable in sustained sequential workloads. Not recommended for most users yet. For most builders, a Gen 4 NVMe SSD like the Samsung 990 Pro or WD Blue SN580 is the best value.
SSDs have a limited number of write cycles before cells wear out, measured in TBW (Terabytes Written). A 1 TB drive rated at 600 TBW can have 600 terabytes written to it before expected failure. For normal use (gaming, productivity), this means years of worry-free operation -- most users write far less than the rated TBW over the drive's useful life. DRAM-less NVMe drives are cheaper but can have slower sustained write performance and slightly lower endurance. Drives with DRAM cache (like the Samsung 990 Pro) handle heavy workloads better. Always keep backups of important data, regardless of drive type.
2.5-inch: The standard form factor for SATA SSDs. Connects via a SATA cable. Compatible with virtually all cases. M.2 2280: The most common M.2 size (22mm wide, 80mm long). Used by most NVMe SSDs. Installs directly into the motherboard's M.2 slot -- no cables needed. M.2 2230: A compact M.2 size (22mm wide, 30mm long). Used in some laptops and the Steam Deck. Less common in desktops. 3.5-inch: Standard HDD form factor. Requires a drive bay and SATA power and data cables. Check how many M.2 slots your motherboard has. Most modern ATX boards have 2-3 M.2 slots.
Best budget option: WD Blue SN580 1TB (around 11,500 DA) -- a solid Gen 4 NVMe SSD with good performance for the price. Best performance: Samsung 990 Pro 1TB or 2TB -- top-tier Gen 4 speeds, excellent endurance, and widely available in Algeria. Bulk storage: A 2TB SATA SSD or 4TB HDD makes a good secondary drive for media and less-played games. Avoid the cheapest no-name SSDs from unknown brands. Stick with Samsung, Western Digital, Kingston, Crucial, or Seagate for reliability.
